You do realise that propaganda has been all too pervasive in the media. The old media was newspapers, radio and tv. The establishment easily and completely control all of the old media. It is a fact. You just have to live in some country for a brief while to understand how you start people around you seem to have the same opinion as their local media. Most people have been dumbed down so much, that they will just parrot whatever the media throws at them. The tv being called an idiot box, is not far from the truth.

The new media has made the establishment uncomfortable as they have more trouble controlling it, than they could the old media. The new media gives everyone around the world, a chance to have their say. It is significantly more difficult to control what everyone can say, than to control a relatively few people who would be allowed to publish their opinion. Anything which the establishment (or The Swamp, as Trump would say) is being labelled fake news. So is anything controversial. They could easily bury such views on the old media. Threaten or change the publisher/editor was a standard tactic.
But you probably know more about this than I do.
If you are afraid of Facebook, you should be more afraid of Google. All those holes/bugs in Windows are there for a reason, and that is not unintentional. You don't suppose organisations with the sort of money and muscle power, like Microsoft or Apple, wouldn't have any Quality Control now, would you? If they can't open-source it, you shouldn't trust their software or hardware.
But I don't worry much about it, as I don't have have a need to hide. Those who do, are in denial that the powers-that-be don't have any information on them. They probably know more about us, than we might ourselves. And I believe it is not a bad thing, unless this information could be used for nefarious purposes. Not all state actors have the best interests of their citizens. Most state actors are puppets in the hands of their masters, most of them covert.
The concern should also be what has always been. When one state actor does it, others want it too. Multiple holes for multiple state (and perhaps non-state) actors. Every government wants to enforce their own control. So many holes, there's more holes than content. Bloatwares becoming too big and complex enough in order to obscure all those holes.
So, talk to people, not just around you, but across the world. Engage with those who don't seem to share the same opinion as parroted by the mainstream media. New media is breaking down boundaries. But they are just a tool. Don't let the new media organisations control your opinion, like the old media have been doing. Don't get sucked into the swamp.
Mind control can be very subtle. It is not unintentional. If you only listen to one viewpoint, you have already been hijacked. Teach yourself critical thinking, and how to resist hypnotism or mind control. Share your learning with the world. We can make the world a better place.
